The cyanide revolution: Efficiency gains and exclusion in artisanal- and small-scale gold mining

چکیده

Since its advent at the end of nineteenth century, cyanide processing facilitated intensification and global expansion industrial gold mining. Today, there are important indications that artisanal small-scale mining (ASGM) is on verge a similar revolution: while ASGM typically associated with mercury-based processing, mercury amalgamation increasingly replaced with, or complemented by, cyanidation. Relying evidence from Philippines, Indonesia, Burkina Faso, we demonstrate how this transition having deeply transformative impact communities. On one hand, cyanidation produces clear efficiency gains. Together rising prices, it fueling dramatic by enabling profitable extraction lower-grade deposits. other contributes to emergence new often highly unequal labor revenue-sharing arrangements. More broadly, these findings uneven socio-technical transformations. Consequently, growing number efforts intervene in technological make-up ASGM, usually name sustainability, should be wary unintended consequences.

Treatment of small scale gold mining wastewater using pilot-scale sedimentation and Cocopeat filter bed system

The use of amalgamation process to recover gold from mined ores by the small-scale gold miners in the Philippines and other developing countries produces and dispose of untreated wastewater to the receiving water bodies. In this study, a field-scale filter bed system was constructed to treat heavy metal metal-laden wastewater collected from small-scale gold mining site in Paracale, Camarines No...

Silica Exposures in Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining in Tanzania and Implications for Tuberculosis Prevention.

Gold miners exposed to crystalline silica are at risk of silicosis, lung cancer, and experience higher incidence rates of pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). Although the hazards associated with mercury exposure in artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) have been well documented, no published data was available on crystalline silica exposures in this population. Air sampling was conducted in the bre...

Injuries among Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Miners in Ghana

Artisanal and small-scale gold miners are confronted with numerous hazards often resulting in varying degrees of injuries and fatalities. In Ghana, like many developing countries, there is paucity of information on the causes and nature of the accidents that result in the injuries. The study was a retrospective, cross sectional type that examined the records of injuries of artisanal and small-s...

Injury Profiles Associated with Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining in Tarkwa, Ghana

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) is inherently risky, but little is known about mining-associated hazards and injuries despite the tremendous growth worldwide of ASGM and the benefits it offers. The current study aimed to characterize the physical injuries associated with ASGM in Ghana to guide policy formulation. A cross-sectional survey was carried out in the Tarkwa mining distric...
